Edward Martell’s path is as rich as his background is storied. With 35 arrests, 19 convictions, 2 adult felonies and 2 juvenile felonies, he wasn’t given much of an opportunity or the expectation to do or be anything beyond navigating the criminal justice system. But his last appearance before Judge Bruce Morrow proved challenging, and life changing.
Judge Morrow challenged Martell to apply his gifts to something other than the streets, and Martell responded accordingly. Carving an uncharted journey, Martell got on the right path and has yet to look back other than to lend a helping hand to those who follow. From earning his GED, to Wayne County Community College to the University of Detroit Law school, Martell set his sights on the other side of the law—and won.
Fifteen years later and in the same courtroom where he issued the challenge, Judge Morrow, proudly swore Martell in as an Attorney. The rest isn’t history, as Martell’s story continues to evolve as an example and inspiration for young men of color around the country. A member of the Perkins Law Group, Martell uses his past experiences for the benefit of his clients. He also spends time on the speaking circuit sharing insight and inspiration to those who need and can use it most as he positively redefines #NotGuilty.
